Going Rogue In A VW Bus

We Like to Call it Going Rogue

Jake (my fiancé) and I have decided to uproot our average American lives. We quit our comfortable day jobs and are moving from Fort Worth, Texas to Colorado! In the meantime, we are getting married in June, and are road tripping in our Jeep for about a month. Then, we will settle down in Colorado and start our mobile coffee van!

Why? Everything seemed so perfect!

I had a stable job and made decent money at a respectable civil engineering firm in Fort Worth, Texas. Long story short, I realized I wasn’t fulfilling my dream to help the world be more sustainable in the job or location I was in. I always had a passion for teaching people about the environment, but didn’t know how to do it as a career. Then I realized, I can combine my two passions: coffee and sustainability! I had come up with the idea to start a mobile coffee van a few years ago, but was afraid to go through with it. I had put so much time and effort into getting an engineering degree and then pursuing a job in engineering. I didn’t want that effort to go to waste. However, once I got into the workforce, I was afraid of what would happen if I didn’t do the coffee biz! Would I stay at a job that made me feel like I was hurting the environment? Would I ever help people live better lives? When will I be able to go on a backpacking or hiking trip? These were questions that ran through my mind almost every day. Now, I’m confident that through Sustain and Able Coffee Co. we can make a difference -- we can be better people for a better world.

What is Sustain and Able Coffee Company?

I’ve been asking myself this question for about a year! I waffled back and forth about what the company would be. Answers ranged from a coffee roastery, a blog, a shop, etc. I finally realized that those answers were someone else’s dreams, and that I had answered the question years ago with a crazy idea I had while in college. We are flipping a Classic 1971 Volkswagen Bus into an environmentally sustainable, coffee van! I had been on the hunt for a van for many months, and finally purchased our bus from Auto Focus in Greensboro, North Carolina. As of now, we will be taking the bus to Colorado, but our final destination is to be announced once we settle down somewhere! Stay tuned on our instagram page for updates on the bus!

Meet our new bus! We haven’t named him yet. His previous owner named him Blue Boy. Do you think we should keep the name or find a new one? Let us know in the comments!

So, where will we be in Colorado?

We don’t know yet! We will let you know when we figure it out. As of now, our personal belongings will be in a storage unit. We will be driving our Jeep Wrangler to Indiana so that we can get married in June. The original plan for our honeymoon was to drive to Alaska; however, the Canadian border is closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, we are planning to drive to the Adirondack Mountains in New York and then we are driving west to check out several national parks. In late July, after our honeymoon, we will decide where to settle down in Colorado! Check in with our instagram to follow our journey. I’ll be posting updates of our trip on our instagram page!

This is our Jeep Wrangler! His name is Abraham, after Abraham Lincoln, since he has the color of a penny! We love going off roading and camping in our Jeep. It’s a game changer when you are going into the deep wilderness!
